8th Light Software Craftsman:

Eric Smith

Eric_smith

Eric graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science at DePaul University. He took his first professional position at the now defunct Mission Studios, where did Mission Editor programming on JetFighter IV: Fortress America. After leaving there, he developed Windows applications both large and small and worked primarily on legacy code bases. He has professional experience in C, C++, C# and Ruby, as well as dabbling in many other languages.

Before joining 8th Light Eric became an early adopter and advocate of Test Driven Development at his position, training coworkers on the practice as well as demonstrating his ability to deliver high quality maintainable applications with no loss in speed. He worked on teams large and small, using many methods including Scrum, XP and Waterfall, and that wide range of experience allows him to tell what works, and what doesn't. He is currently developing in Ruby on Rails on an 8th Light project, but has research interests in open source and other programming languages. He is currently playing with Ruby Cocoa, as he is an enthusastic Mac adopter.

The past year has been eventful for Eric, as he was married on September 9th. In his spare time Eric has run the Chicago Marathon, cowrote a comedy show produced at Donny's Skybox Theatre at the Second City, and drank more coffee than was previously thought possible by one human. In addition to that he will be returning this winter to DePaul to obtain his masters in Software Engineering, while still developing software as a craftsman with 8th Light.
